God’s Ways

A fisherman was sealing one day on the open sea when a strong wind suddenly struck his ship and badly damaged it. He struggled desperately to keep the ship on course, but his efforts proved futile. The wind overpowered the little control he had and pushed the ship farther into the vast sea. Realizing that his own strength was no longer enough, the fisherman turned to God for help. Yet each time he prayed, it seemed as though the sea had a will of its own, growing more violent with every prayer from this faithful man. Although his faith began to weaken, he still clung to the hope that God would save him.

Eventually, the ship broke apart, and the fisherman sank along with it. Fortunately, he was a strong swimmer. He managed to swim several miles to a nearby island, carrying with him a few useful items from the wreckage. On the island, he made a fire by placing wool between two white stones and rubbing them together until friction ignited a flame. Earlier, he had built a small tent, and he brought the fire inside to keep himself warm as he slept. At midnight, however, he woke up to find the fire consuming the tent he had worked so hard to build.

The fisherman was furious. Like anyone would be, he felt abandoned by God. In his heart, he lamented and cursed God, saying that despite the time and effort he had spent serving Him, God had failed to save him. That night, he slept in the cold on the frozen island, and his heart grew even harder with anger and bitterness.

The next morning, around 10 a.m., he saw a ship approaching the island. When the ship arrived, the crew explained that while they were fishing the night before, they had noticed a fire burning on the island and decided to investigate. The fisherman stood motionless as he suddenly realized the truth: it was the fire that had destroyed his tent that allowed these fishermen to find him.

Too weak to move, he was overwhelmed with guilt for having cursed God. He now understood that God had not forsaken him at all—He had been working everything for his good.

Often, the situations we find ourselves in are difficult and overwhelming. We pray earnestly for God’s help, yet it sometimes feels as though our prayers have fallen on deaf ears. We must remember, however, that all things work together for our good. In every circumstance, we should give God the glory He deserves and continue to trust Him. As we enter this new year, let our relationship with God grow stronger.
