Love: The Christ-Like Nature
Love: The Christ-Like Nature
By Nasarah Peter Dashe
Love is a strong, positive emotion — an expression of compassion, goodwill, and genuine concern toward people we cherish unconditionally. Jesus demonstrated this kind of love toward us.
“While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
This is the highest form of love.
And just as He showed it to us, we are expected to show it to:
-
our brethren in church,
-
our family members,
-
strangers,
-
and even those who have not yet accepted Jesus.
The Church of Old — A Model of Christ-like Love
In Acts 2:44–47, we see a powerful picture:
-
Believers continued with one accord
-
They broke bread together
-
They sold their possessions
-
They supported the needy
-
They lived in unity and joy
What manner of love is this?
No wonder the people of old looked at them and said:
“These are Christians — followers of Christ.”
Why?
Because they displayed the nature of Jesus, which is love.
The Commandment That Defines Us
Jesus said something profound:
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you…
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples.” — John 13:34–35
You cannot say you are in Christ and lack love.
God is love — and anyone who walks with Him must walk in love.
Love in All Directions
1. Love Toward Leaders
We must respect those who rule over us.
Pray for them.
Support them.
Do not criticize needlessly or dishonor authority.
By doing this, we show the difference between Christianity and the world.
2. Love Toward Servants or Workers
Do not take advantage of those under you.
Their cries reach God, and He Himself said He would avenge them.
A Christian must be merciful and just.
3. Love Toward Strangers
Show kindness to strangers.
The Bible says many have entertained angels unaware.
We saw this happen with Abraham, Lot, and even the parents of Samson.
Israel was instructed to love strangers because they themselves were once strangers in another land.
4. Love Toward Offenders
Love is not only for those who treat us well — but also for those who wrong us.
If we only love the people who do us good, how are we different from unbelievers?
They hate offenders, and you hate offenders — where is the Christ-like nature?
Jesus calls us to a higher life.
The Highest Standard
Above all, love unconditionally — as Christ has loved you.
Not because people deserve it,
Not because they treat you right,
But because love is the identity of a true Christian.
May God grant us the grace to love like Jesus.
Amen.
