Emotion: A Dangerous Guide
Emotion: A Dangerous Guide
By Nasarah Peter Dashe
Emotion is a stirring of the mind or soul — a strong feeling, whether pleasant or painful, that can disturb our judgment and lead us toward actions driven more by impulse than by truth.
It is powerful. It is real.
But most importantly: emotion is not always spiritual direction.
A Pastor With a Political Dream
There was once a man — a pastor — who stood before his congregation and declared that he wanted to contest in the next gubernatorial election.
He spoke with passion — claiming that God had revealed to him the failures of the current and past leaders. He was convinced he had been chosen to make a difference. The people listened — moved, some even to tears — and believed him.
He listed several failings in the current leadership:
-
Transparency
The leaders were not honest with public funds. He claimed that only someone God-fearing could fix such corruption. -
Good Governance
He said, “The current leaders do not care for the needs of the people.” The congregation cheered — believing at last someone understood their pain. -
Accountability
He insisted the leaders lacked responsibility, which was why the government was failing. -
Insecurity
“A true leader must protect the people,” he declared. “Any leader who fails in this has failed God.”
As he continued, the church became convinced that he was the right man — even God’s chosen vessel to lead them. They pledged their support.
One Voice of Caution
But among the church members was a woman who knew the pastor well. Though silent, she sensed something off. She didn’t speak — perhaps to avoid judgment — but she knew something wasn’t right.
Still, the campaign began. The pastor gathered votes, promoted himself as the godly alternative — and eventually won. He became governor.
Emotion is Not Calling
Yet, in four years of his leadership, not one of his promises was fulfilled.
He did worse than the very leaders he once condemned.
The same people who cheered him now mourned for choosing him.
The truth was now undeniable:
It wasn’t God that sent him. It was his emotion.
He mistook his passion for divine calling.
And by the time he realized, shame had already replaced honor.
That’s life.
The Warning in Scripture
“In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”
— Proverbs 3:6
Sometimes what looks good, safe, noble, and even godly is nothing but emotion — a counterfeit direction.
Remember: every bad thing we see today once started as “a good idea.”
Only God knows tomorrow — so we must seek Him before walking into it.
It doesn’t matter if the decision is small or life-changing — inquire of the Lord first.
That’s what King David did — he asked God about everything before acting, and because of it, God perfected his way.
Final Message
Trusting emotion without confirmation from God is like building a house on sand. It can look fine for a while — until the storm comes.
Let your decisions be based on His voice, not your feelings.
Lean on Him, and He will make all your ways perfect.
