Imagination

: Another Tool the Devil Uses to Bring You Down

By Nasarah Peter Dashe

Imagination is one of the most powerful forces in human life — and one of the most subtle weapons the devil uses against the children of God.

What Is Imagination?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, imagination is “the ability to form pictures or ideas in your mind of things that are new or not real.”

Psychologists describe imagination as the mental process that combines what we have seen, heard, and experienced to create something new — whether good or bad.

In simple terms, your imagination is a creative factory built inside your mind. It can build your dreams, or it can build your destruction — depending on who controls it.

How Imagination Works

When you want to create something, your mind gathers information about it. For instance, if you decide to design a car, you’ll collect details about cars — their parts, shapes, and functions — and then combine those ideas to form your own version of a car.

The same process happens unconsciously in our minds every day. The images, experiences, and memories we store become the raw materials of our imagination. And this is where the devil tries to interfere.

How the Devil Manipulates Imagination

1. By Replaying Past Sins and Temptations

If you have ever watched pornography, heard indecent talk, or been involved in sexual immorality in the past, even if you’ve repented, the devil tries to use those stored memories against you.

He mixes those past experiences and projects them back into your imagination — creating new, vivid mental pictures of sin. Suddenly, you begin to experience things in your mind that you never intended to think about.

If you fall into it, it becomes temptation fulfilled. But if you resist, you overcome.

That’s why James 1:14–15 says:

“Each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin.”

The battle begins in the imagination.

2. By Replaying Old Offenses and Grudges

Another way the devil uses imagination is by replaying the record of your pain.

He reminds you of who hurt you — what they said, how they betrayed you — and he plays the “movie” again and again in your mind until anger and bitterness grow stronger.

Unforgiveness feeds his power. When you refuse to let go of past offenses, you become trapped in a mental prison. You keep reliving what God already asked you to release.

But Ephesians 4:31–32 says:

“Let all bitterness, wrath, and anger be put away from you… and be kind to one another, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Forgiveness is not a favor to your offender — it’s freedom for your own heart.

3. By Using Fear to Power Imagination

Fear and imagination work together. Fear provides the emotion; imagination provides the picture.

The devil uses fear to project false images of disaster — what could go wrong, who might fail you, what tragedy might happen. But most of those things never happen.

He knows that what you constantly imagine, you eventually believe — and what you believe, you attract. That’s why faith and fear both use the imagination as a channel.

Part 2: Sanctifying the Mind

The mind is not meant to be a playground for evil; it’s meant to be a temple for divine creativity.

Romans 12:2 says:

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Here’s how to sanctify your imagination and reclaim it for God:

1. Filter What You Feed Your Mind

Your mind produces from what it consumes. Garbage in, garbage out.
Guard your eyes, ears, and thoughts. If you wouldn’t plant rotten seeds in your farm, don’t plant them in your mind.

2. Replace Evil Thoughts with Godly Meditations

Philippians 4:8 teaches:

“Whatever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report — think on these things.”

The moment a sinful or fearful imagination appears, don’t argue with it. Replace it immediately with God’s Word.

3. Forgive and Forget

Let go of what’s behind you. Every time the devil reminds you of old hurts, remind him of the forgiveness you’ve already received and given.
Say out loud, “I am free from the past. My heart is clean, and my mind belongs to God.”

4. Use Your Imagination for Faith

Imagination is not evil by itself — it becomes evil when misused.
You can also use it for good. Imagine yourself healed, victorious, and walking in purpose. Visualize your answered prayers, your growth, and your peace. That’s what faith does — it sees before it manifests.

Final Thoughts

Imagination can be heaven or hell inside your head — depending on who has the key.

The devil wants to occupy your imagination to control your future, but God wants to cleanse it so you can create your destiny.

Every great thing begins as a thought. Every sin also begins as one.
The difference lies in what you allow to stay.

So, guard your imagination — it’s the canvas where faith paints your future, and where fear tries to destroy it.
