FEAR: The Devil’s Strongest Tool

By Nasarah Peter Dashe

Fear is one of the strongest tools Satan uses to bring down the children of God — often without their knowledge.

What Is Fear?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, fear is “an unpleasant emotion or thought that you have when you are frightened or worried by something dangerous, painful, or bad that is happening or might happen.”

Notice the phrase “might happen.” Fear often feeds on possibilities, not realities. It builds on our imagination of what could go wrong rather than what actually is. And Satan knows this — so he manipulates it.

How Satan Uses Fear Against Believers

The devil doesn’t need to attack you physically; all he needs is to plant fear in your heart. Once fear grows, faith begins to shrink. And when faith shrinks, victory fades.

Let’s look at three major ways the enemy uses fear to control and weaken people:

1. Through Thoughts

The mind is the battlefield of fear. Satan uses our past experiences — pain, rejection, failure, loss — to replay old wounds and whisper lies about the future.

He reminds you of your failures until you believe you’re unworthy. He magnifies your weaknesses until you forget God’s strength.

But remember, 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”
Your thoughts can either feed your fear or fuel your faith. The moment you take control of your mind through the Word of God, fear begins to lose its grip.

2. Through People

Sometimes, the enemy uses people to intimidate or threaten us — especially when we stand for truth or fight for justice.

They may tell you to give up, to back down, or to stop believing. But do not be shaken. Every great man or woman of faith faced opposition. When you stand for what’s right, fear will try to silence you through people who appear stronger or louder — but remember, they are not greater than your God.

3. Through Dreams

Dreams are another major tool the devil manipulates to plant fear. He uses disturbing or terrifying images — deaths, failures, loss — to make people panic.

But most of these are not revelations from God, but projections from fear and imagination.

For instance,

  • Dreams of sexual intercourse with unknown beings (what people call spiritual husbands or wives) are often not demonic marriages, but reflections of impure thoughts or emotional stress.
The book of Jude 1:8 calls such people “filthy dreamers” who defile the flesh — meaning these are dreams born out of corrupted imagination, not divine messages.
Cleanse your mind, and such dreams will fade away.

  • Dreams of death or graves — seeing yourself or loved ones buried — are not prophecies of doom. The devil uses these to terrify you into believing something bad will happen. The moment you accept that lie, your fear gives him permission to act.

That’s why some people say, “Whenever I dream something bad, it always happens.” The truth is, it happens because fear has become faith in the wrong direction.

Understanding the Spirit Behind Fear

Fear is not just an emotion — it’s a spirit. And God did not give it to you. When you allow fear, you open the door for the enemy to control your reactions, your decisions, and your faith.

The Bible says, “Perfect love casts out fear” (1 John 4:18). Fear cannot stay where the love of God lives.

Part 2: Conquering Fear Spiritually

1. Know Your Rights in Christ

The best way to defeat fear is to know what God has said about you. Every time the devil brings a fearful thought, respond with scripture.

When he says, “You will fail,” say, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
When he says, “You are alone,” say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid.” (Hebrews 13:6)

2. Replace Fear with Faith

Fear and faith cannot live together — one must leave for the other to grow. Faith is simply believing what God said even when you can’t see it yet.

Every time fear speaks, speak louder with faith. Don’t let silence make the enemy stronger.

3. Keep Your Imagination Pure

Most fears are born in the imagination. Guard your mind from negativity, impurity, and worry. Feed it with the promises of God instead of the threats of the enemy.

4. Pray and Confess Boldly

Prayer is not begging God to remove fear — it’s declaring His authority over your mind. Speak God’s Word daily until fear no longer recognizes your heart as a home.

Say:

“I refuse to fear. I am a child of God. I walk in power, love, and a sound mind.”

Repeat it until your spirit believes it.

Final Thoughts

Fear is not from God. It’s a lie dressed as a warning. It whispers that danger is coming, but in truth, it’s only testing your belief in God’s promises.

The same weapon the devil uses to destroy is the one you can use to grow — when you turn fear into faith.

Whenever fear comes knocking, let faith answer the door.
